Our Youth Development articles are meant to create awareness for all of the incredible ways kids can develop from youth sports. The goal is to expand your lens to see development along with performance and results. If you see development happening, even during poor performance or poor results, it can give you the power to make the most of the experience and align with your personal priorities in youth sports.
Youth sports can instill a deep-seated passion in children that can guide them throughout their lives. This passion can be categorized into three main areas: a love for growth and development, a love for physical activity, and a passion for pursuing excellence.
The Life-long Passions Cultivated Through Youth Sports
A Love for Growth Mindset and Development
Youth sports provide a unique platform for children to develop a growth mindset. This mindset is not just about winning or losing; it's about learning from every experience, focusing on the next opportunity, and nurturing a sense of curiosity. It's about loving the process of development, understanding that every step taken, whether forward or backward, is a step towards growth.
A Love for Physical Activity
Youth sports also instill a love for physical activity. The joy of running, jumping, sweating, and even getting dirty, is a fundamental part of sports. This love for physical activity can set the foundation for a healthy lifestyle, encouraging children to stay active and fit throughout their lives.
A Passion for Pursuing Excellence
Lastly, youth sports can ignite a passion for pursuing excellence. This is not just about being the best, but about giving your all, leading others to do the same, and maintaining a positive attitude. This passion can drive children to strive for excellence in all areas of their lives, from academics to personal relationships.
The Value of These Passions
These passions cultivated through youth sports are deeply valuable life skills. According to the Aspen Institute, 95% of youth athletes report they have learned important life lessons from sports.
Today, as children, these passions can enhance school performance, social growth, and overall happiness. They can help children become better siblings and friends, teaching them the importance of teamwork, respect, and resilience.
Near-Term, as they grow older and enter college, these passions can set them up for success in the "real world". They can provide the drive to excel academically, the resilience to overcome challenges, and the leadership skills to inspire others. A study from The University of Michigan found that students who participated in youth sports are more likely to graduate from college.
Long-Term, throughout their lives, these passions can help individuals stay fit, healthy, and socially active. They can inspire them to participate in recreational leagues, go on adventurous trips, and even play and interact with their own children someday.
Cultivating These Passions: Top 7 Tips
Encourage a Growth Mindset: Pick something to learn from a win and a loss, and celebrate the growth from that learning. Do it over and over and they will love to learn. Ask them to find a learning. Promote their curiosity to look for their own ways to improve.
Promote Physical Activity: Push the kids to run hard, throw hard, move quickly, jump, be aggressive and celebrate when they give it their all, just being physically active.
Instill a Passion for Excellence: Teach children the value of hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude. Celebrate effort every time. The skills and tools will come, and then results will come.
Be a Role Model: Show children what it means to be passionate, dedicated, and positive. Your actions will inspire them.
Provide Support: Be there for your children. Celebrate their victories, comfort them in their losses, and always encourage them to keep going. Tell them "Let's care most about who scores the NEXT goal!"
Encourage Teamwork: Teach children the importance of working together, respecting others, and being a good team player. Ask the kids to lead wherever possible. e.g., rather than telling all the kids where to stand, pick one kid and have them tell all the kids where to stand.
Keep it Fun: Remember, at the end of the day, sports should be fun. Encourage children to enjoy the process, not just the outcome. The goal is to help them develop their definition of "Fun." Remind them let's not be "Silly," but let's have "Fun." Ask them whether it was "Fun," to run hard or learn XYZ. Tell them it was "So Fun" watching you pick up that skill or run hard.
At Sport4Growth, we are passionate about empowering people to participate in and create youth sports experiences that can change the world for the better.
